The Tiger II, often referred to as the King Tiger or even the Bengal Tiger (Königstiger), was the largest and heaviest battle tank deployed by the German Army during World War II. It was developed as a replacement for the Tiger and was intended to be a heavy tank capable of breaking through enemy lines and destroying their fortifications and tanks in the process. However, the tank proved to be a burden on the overstretched German armaments production system and the military logistics system that supported it, with more Tiger II tanks being destroyed by their own tankers than by the Allies. When the Tiger II found the enemy and went into battle, it served the German Army well and proved to be a formidable frontal opponent, combining an excellent gun with heavy armor. However, these were rare and spaced out, as units were often unable to get into position due to lack of spare parts or fuel, and when paralyzed, were often unable to recover. The Tiger II simply failed to live up to the promise of a heavy breakthrough tank and never overcame its technical shortcomings, but it still manages to fire the imagination of enthusiasts, modelers and historians alike.
